Recommended Reading for October 24

For our October 24, 2014 iZosh event book discussion, we will revisit Half The Sky’s chapter 11: ” Microcredit: The Financial Revolution.” A compelling quote from Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General, opens this chapter: “It is impossible to realize our goals while discriminating against half the human race. As study after study has taught us, there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.” Throughout this chapter, you will read stories of such empowerment, stories of individual women whose lives have been impacted by access to microloans. One women is Goretti, from Burundi, who began her ascent out of extreme poverty with a $2 loan to buy fertilizer for her garden. The fertilizer helped her increase her yield of potatoes, which she then sold at the market. Within 3 months, she had repaid all of the original loan. Realizing that investing wisely works, Goretti used her profits to launch a new business. When she was able to borrow again, she did so, and expanded her business. Now she can buy the essentials her family needs: mosquito nets to prevent malaria, nutritious food, pens and notebooks for her children’s schooling. One priceless thing Goretti has gained is confidence in herself. “Before, I underestimated myself,’ Goretti said, “I wouldn’t say anything to anybody. Now I know I have good ideas, and I tell people what I think.” A step out of extreme poverty, and onto the economic ladder, like Goretti’s, is a step to be celebrated.
